  1. After looking through the recruits we have coming in, and the ladies that are coming back from this year, it will be us and SDSU competing for the title next year - hands down. And it is possible that both of us could get bids to the Big Dance in March if we play to our potential. You heard it here first!

  2. I find this statement by HCRS so important on several levels for coach to improve going into his 2nd season. First of all, Kyle isn't successful because he keeps things simple; Kyle is successful because his coach keeps things simple for him! They are not trying to make him a 3-point shooter or learn spacing on the perimeter, they are teaching how to make himself available in the paint and good, simple, basic footwork. They are teaching him solid rebounding fundamentals on both ends of the floor and good position team defense played with his feet and not continually getting dumb fouls because he is reaching and trying to block every shot. You watch SDSU and they do such a good job with their bigs, they are so well coached on the basics. Kyle is a great athlete, so he looks incredible, Appel is an average athlete, at best, but still very effective. I think one area where we can really improve next year is in the post; keep it simple coach, let's get our bigs to be able to score around the rim and play good team defense and rebound. Coach needs to go get an asst. coach that can teach solid post fundamental skills; footwork, stop playing D with our hands and getting the same dumb fouls over and over. How to post up strong and provide the passer a target, and a couple basic post moves, like the up and under. And finally, how to box out, our bigs are too big and athletic for us to be getting out rebounded like we are every game. Don't over think it coach, keep it simple and do the basics consistently well!

  3. I like McBride but the tournament being held in Sioux Falls had no bearing on the early exit. The lack of development and regression to iso ball we witnessed all season was a much larger factor than all the Jackrabbit fans.

  4. It's never too early grip, in fact the next few weeks and months may be the most important of HCRS career, The transfer portal opens in a week! This off season is critical for who we can keep and who we can bring in. No team stands still in college basketball, you either improve or you get worse! Coach had a tough first year on the court, let's hope he has a strong first recruiting class of his own. Best case situation he has to replace DJ & KT, worst case Isaac and Bedford also leave! This offseason is crucial for the future of the program, do we get better moving forward? or do we get worse?

  5. About as expected tonight but TheEagleman not giving up on Springmann just yet....and yeah the Summit Tourney should get moved around....but good luck with that....

  6. I am out on Springmann. We unfortunately will have to wait a few more seasons for a coaching change but I’ve seen enough. The way this season was mismanaged was absolute malpractice.

  7. Yes, there is an NIL but there is no one getting a six-figure deal at ORU. The state of college athletics is in such a state of flux currently. We are attempting to build the donor base and compete. Our fans can contribute to the NIL at www.eternalflamecollective.com.

  8. ORU82 Golden Eagle 1.3k Sports: ORU, Ohio, Steelers, Pirates Posted May 30, 2021 One thing is for sure, the trajectory of the program has been downward for at least the last several years. As OT said, given our resources, geography, history and whatever, we are not getting the best possible return on our investment. It seems that we are settling for mediocre at best. Coach Folmar did not inherit a team/program that was in the toilet and had to be rebuilt, he took over a team/program that had a very impressive and rich history. Sadly, we have gotten worse rather then better. It is time for a change. BTW, congrats to NDSU and good luck in the "Big Dance". Make the Summit League proud Bizon! I don’t think this post will age well either.

  9. POWERFUL post-game press conference by Isaac, Kareem and Coach Springmann. As fans we put a lot of importance on winning, but when I watch a press conference like that it makes me proud of this team and the quality people that are on it.

  10. ORU has to find a starting big next year who can post up and rebound. Herron, Jones, and Smith are ok coming off the bench but the Eagles desperately need a starting center from the portal, juco, etc. Easier said than done because of course everybody in the nation wants one of those!

  11. Eagles had good guard play/3 point shooters but lack of inside scorer/rebounder and weak bench leads to a 12-19 season. SDSU has good guard play, interior scoring and bench play and that is why they won the conference. That guy William Kyle for the Jackrabbits is maybe the best athlete in the conference since I can remember. He can jump out of the gym. Big thanks to the seniors, DJ and Kareem, who had a great career and helped ORU to the Sweet 16 and then a 30 win season. Kareem finishes tied for 7th in school history in steals and DJ finishes tied for 4th in school history in blocks!

  12. I have to disagree with you Keenan, I think we need to do just the opposite. IMHO for us to win today we have to slow down their bigs, we cannot let Appel and Kyle just kill us down low. The last time we played them in Brookings, Appel just scored at will on that same up and under move we've seen a thousand times over the last few years and Kyle owned the glass and set up so low he had dunk after dunk with our bigs just watching. We have to fight them off the low block, stay on our feet and box them out and force them to take tough perimeter shots with a hand up and then have all five guys boxing out their man, limiting them to one shot. We know they can beat us inside, lets make them do something different and force them to beat us outside without 2nd and 3rd shot attempts per possession. Bring some heart and pride tonight Blue as we have a great opportunity to win a tourney that a week ago looked like we had no chance in! Expect a Miracle!! Go Eagles!!

  14. As ORU 40 stated this is a critical off season for HCRS. Not only does he need to recruit players that can help ORU compete for a conference title but the players have to have a good chemistry and fight for each other and for HCRS. This is clearly something they didn’t have this year. With all of Springman’s connections and years of recruiting if anybody can do it he certainly can. Since ORU is unlikely to get 4 or 5 star recruits the chemistry part may be the most important. My hope is just like we turned drastically in the wrong direction this past year hopefully we will turn the other way this coming year. Unlike previous years when there was no portal we could actually have a huge turnaround in 1 year! Let’s hope and believe!

  15. With several new players it will take about 20 games for Coach Folmar to settle in on who he can really trust. This team lost a lot of amazing players from last year’s team that are not easily replaceable.

  16. Well I was at a tournament game when UMKC beat ORU way back when but I guess it was the Mid Continent Conference then (not the Summit League).

  17. Coach Springman said some interesting statements in the post game: 1. It felt like SDSU went on a 40-0 run during that decisive stretch at the end of the first half. 2. He learned a lot this season in his first year as coach: mainly how many hours, meetings, etc it takes to build a winning mentality in players. He said you have change their thinking from me to we. 3. He almost cried when asked about McBride and Thompson's impact on the team. 4. He raved about William Kyle and how he keeps things simple: score around the rim and plays great team defense 5. He said Kareem turned down six figures in NIL money to come back to ORU.

  18. Yes it is baseball and it is a hard, and sometimes cruel, game. I'm nowhere near the point of giving up on this team but today's performance is concerning. It is possible that UML is better than the writers who cover the American Conference think they are. Teams do outperform their preseason prognostication. I still think it is fair to say that this is a team that ORU should sweep. All respect to the Redhawks who never quit, in either game, and battled for a win in the second game today and almost stole one in the first game.

  19. Why we played these guys so much for the entire season is unfathomable … They are obviously fatigued and have been for a month. And as a result, we have guys on the bench who played very limited minutes and were unable to gain experience or mature.

  20. I wouldn't give up on this team yet! This is baseball. UML made some good plays and obviously hit the ball well. Maybe they weren't as bad as we thought.

  21. There is officially trouble in River City blowing a 7-0 lead. With all due respect to the Redhawks.

  22. Although, I don’t think that was the point he was making. He was saying Tulsa is a beautiful city and an excellent place to host the tournament. He said in other sports the school that wins the conference title gets to host the postseason tournament, and he thinks basketball should be that way as well. I don’t think he was blaming the loss on the location. At least that is my take on what he said. The things he was saying made me wonder if he was actually responding to some of Paul Mills arguments from last season more than about this season, because in effect, the team that won the regular season title is more or less hosting the postseason tournament.

  24. Losing our starting catcher is HUGE. Also, our pitching has not been as good as I expected. Last year going into conference we were 10-8 - not that different. I still believe we will win the Summit. Winning the regional is a huge task which I don't expect to repeat often.

  25. Mary Carden and the Idabel Warriors won their first girls' state basketball championship in Class 3A. Mary is going to add a new dimension to our women's basketball team for sure, but it will take time for her to get up to the speed of D-1 basketball and learn how to play Kelsi's style. Here are some pictures from tonight's game.

  26. It will be a slow process: I do not expect Springmann to win 20 plus and go to the tournament next year but he needs to get ORU back to 500. Then build from there. SDSU's fan base will buy 10,000 plus tickets every year, so why would the Summit League change it's location. It is a money move.

  27. Somebody needs to beat SDSU and send their 10,000 plus fans home for a one hour drive. I am rooting for KC to shut them down with their defense in the championship game.

  28. Isaac said in the postgame that the tournament should not always be played on basically SDSU's homecourt. He said the winner of the previous season should host the tournament as baseball and soccer do. McBride said it could be played at the BOK in downtown Tulsa. I thought it was a really good point. We talked about this before but I do not see the tournament changing sites for another 10 years.

  29. ORU looked tired after about 10 minutes in the first half. SDSU goes on a 24-0 run in the last 10 minutes of the half. That is your ball game folks. The Eagles started out up 16-6 and they woke up the angry lion in SDSU.

  30. The Eagles played SDSU tough in both games vs SDSU. I would expect them to play with some energy early on but they may run out of gas in the 2nd half. Max and Kareem lead the nation in most minutes on court. It looked like Kareem was starting to cramp up late in yesterday's win. They need a break in the first half.

  32. Trey was a plus 17 in just 18 minutes! Not sure you can do much better than that! I like how he slowly drives the ball and then kicks to an open shooter. ORU could have used more of that this year.

  33. Kareem played his first game way back in 2020 vs Missouri. He had 9 points and 4 rebounds. KT will play his 125 game tonight and DJ will play his 155, so 280 combined!

  34. Well, color me shocked - and glad of it. Congrats to the guys for a gutsy, timely performance. Every one of them played better than they have in weeks. Highlights of the evening for me: The times (and there were many) when ORU would miss a shot, and rather than the other team grab the ball, instead gathered the carom for themselves and continued with the offensive possession. I'm told that particular move is called an "offensive rebound" and boy, they sure did come in handy! Seriously, +7 in the rebounding category was huge. I've said this since November: if ORU can just break even on rebounds, and get to the free throw line a decent amount of the time, they should be in any game. The inbounds play when the game was tied 42-all (and USD was on what looked like a serious run) was epic. With only 3 seconds on the shot clock near the end of a seemingly wasted possession, Kareem curled off a Jones pick and splashed a contested 3 from the corner off the inbound pass for a lead ORU would never relinquish. And Josh didn't foul on the screen! (actually, he did kind of chuck the defender in the chest, but there was no call). And my favorite: Trey Phipps splashing a three late in the second half to put the lead into double-digits and forcing a Coyote timeout. He was grinning ear-to-ear as he back-pedaled down the floor, and when the whistle blew for the timeout, he carried that same grin all the way into the huddle to his exuberant teammates. THAT'S the kind of joy and spirit we've been looking for ALL YEAR from this team, and coupled wth Kareem's inbounds three, it seemed to really relax everybody as they closed the game out with big time threes from Bedford and McBride and some solid free throw shooting. A win vs. SDSU would be incredible, but frankly THIS was the game that I thought they just had to win, or at least look more like they cared, and they did (and then some). Whatever happens Saturday is gravy in my book. It's just a shame none of the team ever post on this forum, so they could come on here in all their victorious glory to say "HA!! UP YOURS, EAGLEMAN!! BITE ME, OLD TITAN!!" but as they obviously showed once again in their postgame interviews, they are WAY too classy to stoop to that level (but if they care to, maybe they can just let me know face-to-face at a baseball game down the road).
