  1. Coach Sutton was always extremely kind to me when I would email him. I would encourage him and thank him for the work he did at ORU with the team and having a positive influence on the men he was entrusted with. He was extremely kind to set me up with complimentary tickets when they played at Penn State, West Virginia and South Carolina. I really appreciated that.

  2. You are correct. It was a MUCH better situation for all. However, the woke University administrations felt it more important for the ladies to have their "own stage". Of course, these are the same people that are all for dudes using the women's restroom, so...

  3. Scott's early coaching staff was not much unlike what we are experiencing with our current situation. A strong group of men that relied on each other's strengths and covered for their weaknesses. After the NCAA runs in the mid-2000's, I think that there was a continuity there that started to allow some (i.e., Corey to Florida State) to fly the coup and spread their wings. However, family is stronger than friends, and Sean needed a place to land. Although I believe everyone liked each other, the chemistry started to wane as OT states, the downturn in terms of on-court successes started to be seen with the loss of Tom Hankins (Scott's brother-in-law) and Conley Phipps. The departure of Scott was a disaster but he has always been a class act to those around the program and he was always a great and approachable guy off the court. I hope that time heals all wounds and Scott would find it in his heart to want to accept a level of gratitude from our fan base for his hard work through the years.

  4. We can never forget what Coach Sutton did for our program and university. I certainly hope ORU inducts him into their HOF and has a really big event surrounding him. Nothing but respect for Scott, as I am sure everyone on this board does.

  5. Paul Mills ain't leaving ORU and surely isn't going to OU.....not gonna happen...at least not in the near future.........of course....TheEagleman also predicted that Connor Vanover had no chance to be in our starting line up...so there's that to consider.....

  7. I hate the way they schedule the men's and women's games. I have to chose between seeing the women's team play live or the livestream of the men's game. Doesn't it save travel costs to allow both teams to travel together? I liked when the women's games were before the men's games--I was much more likely to attend, especially on Saturdays.

  8. Count me as another one who enjoyed a great relationship with Scott. He was always very approachable, as were his early assistants Tom Hankins, Corey Williams, Conley Phipps, and Steve Upshaw (who is still on staff and a great guy). But, I never did get to know the very private-bordering-on-anti-social Sean Sutton, and I'm convinced that Scott's career took its downturn in terms of his on-court success and his off-court relationship with the ORU administration when he brought his brother on board. It was ultimately Scott's dogged defense of Sean that resulted in the awkward and bitter dismissal of both.

  9. ORU up to a gaudy No. 4 in this solid mid-major poll that includes West Coast Conference schools (not holding my breath to see if ORU evntually leap-frogs Gonzaga or Saint Mary's - lol)

  10. As OT and his Dad said - it’s tough to win on the road. The home team is familiar with the arena and they usually get calls from the officials on their home court. ORU needs to stay focused, defend well and use their athleticism/depth to wear down the Tommies. Don’t look past any opponent and just win the next one. I don’t care how much we win by as long as we win.

  11. From the article: “Fans can support their favorite players in the remaining rounds by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, February 10 on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process."

  12. And if the ORU stat crew followed the “OldTitan and TrueBlue82 stat-keeping protocols”, he’d already have the all-time record! (Not to say that it wouldn’t have some “homer” bias). I know that we’ve hashed this out before, but it is interesting, that of ORU’s 21 D-1 games, 11 have been on the road and 10 at home. In those 11 road games, CV has 37 blocks, for an average of 3.36 bpg. In the ten home games, he has 25 blocks, for an average of 2.50 bpg. That’s a pretty significant disparity, especially when you consider that the competition on the road has been much stiffer. So, do I believe CV gets more “benefit of the doubt” of blocks on the road than he does at home, for some unknown reason? Yes, I do, and I think that the numbers support that claim. As to why? I have no idea.

  13. Invariably, this is the price of success. While it may sting a bit at times, it’s a good problem to have!

  14. I hear you, Terry. And you are correct, that was a mistake. I would imagine one he probably regrets. Truth is, both Sutton and Mills are really good guys, with a LOT of similarities (personality and as coaches).

  15. Sadly I look stuff up, because I'm a geek. The ORU Athletics website has everything one might need for reference in the "Record Book" section: https://oruathletics.com/documents/2022/12/5/2022-23ORUMBBMediaGuide.pdf

  16. No comparison. Mazzio's is a chain (think Pizza Hut) while Hideaway is a "boutique" pizza joint. I think Hideaway originated in Stillwater, while Mazzio's is a Tulsa tradition. It's just decent, cheap pizza and been around Tulsa for a long time.

  17. Total ORU wins...and TheEagleman loves Coach Sutton...when the dust settles the guy needs to to be in the ORU HOF....yeah it was time for a change but handled poorly on both sides...need to forgive and mend fences....the guy always answered my emails as does Paul Mills....

  19. It's a fascinating prospect because of factors we've discussed already: ORU still has the same star player and same head coach as two years ago, which is rare for low-to-mid-majors. Usually the coach leaves and/or the player leaves early or transfers. Butler and Wichita State are a couple of examples of mid-majors with household-name coaches and players in multiple years, but they were Gonzaga-like programs at the time from conferences that frequently had multiple teams in the tournament. ORU came out of nowhere in a one-bid league two years ago. To make the tournament in high-flying fashion with members of the same cast (and after falling short of expectations last season) would be unprecedented for a school ORU's size.

  20. I have noticed that trend in all of our trips as well. Our 16 seeded team was really really good.

  21. I was a bit too harsh with that comment - but Sutton not getting Meloy in that NCAA tournament game was pretty bad.

  22. As mentioned in the "Coach Mills" thread today, it appears it's time to start the ol' rumor mill again in light of the following coaching developments that could affect ORU, other local schools, and the Summit League: Paul Mills' name is bound to be mentioned in openings around the region, due to ORU's success and the success of fellow Scott Drew underlings Paul Tang (Kansas State) and Grant McCasland (North Texas). Porter Moser at Oklahoma is on thin ice in just his second year; could he bolt for Notre Dame if offered and draw Coach Mills into the Sooners picture? Is Kelvin Sampson too old to consider the open Texas job, or the San Antonio Spurs job should Greg Popovich retire at season's end? Who would Houston look at to replace him if he left? Is ORU's Russell Springmann a candidate to become an assistant at Texas for whoever gets that job, or a regional mid-major (or Summit League) head coaching position? To be continued...

  23. That happened back in Morrison's senior year when ORU was 27-6 and 17-1 in conference play. They also had a couple of solid non-conference victories over Xavier and Texas Tech but ended up as 4 seed in the NIT, which is about 15 teams away from being selected in the Big Dance. The problem this year is that they do not have a real impressive non-conference win. Liberty was a good win but it will not move the committee to select ORU.

  24. I think the old technique was actually better for the women's program. When I was a student, we attended the women's game in order to assure ourselves of getting good seats for the men's game. We didn't just sit there and stare at our phones, because they hadn't been invented yet. We watched the game and cheered for the Lady Titans. @Old Titanwill remember the details better than me but I recollect some pretty good crowds and support for the women's team back in those days.

  25. FINALLY the podcast we all (well, at least ME) have been waiting for: a deep-dive beyond the box scores that details the how's and why's of ORU's success this season, plus a great interview with Golden Eagle play-by-play man Adam Hildebrandt. A complete about-face by all three hosts - they even have nice things to say about Paul Mills! (lol) My theory on the turnaround? I honestly don't think they had actually seen ORU play until Midco Sports finally covered an ORU game (the Saturday matinee at UND a couple of weekends ago). One of the hosts did the color on that broadcast, and he exhibits perhaps the most dramatic change-of-heart. For whatever reason, they are now true believers - an hour well-spent listening to their "conversion".

  26. If Mills were EVER thinking about leaving ORU for a P5 job, this would be the year. His "stock" will never be higher.

  31. The only comparison to Hideaway is that Mazzios is an ORU sponsor. I worked there for 5 years and ate the food all the time. After I left, I did not eat it for 5 years. Now I like it again. They have a decent cauliflower crust that is a must for me and pizza.

  33. It would be quite a challenge because even if Coach Mills wins on average 20 games per season then it would take him 12 more years to catch Coach Sutton. Which is a high expectation because over 12 years usually even good coaches have an off season. So, realistically it would probaly take 15 years to catch Coach Sutton. Whatever one may think of Sutton, he was a consistent winner besides those last two seasons. Just a solid guy that was good for a long time. In fact, he had 14 straight winning seasons. Can Mills do that? Time will tell

  34. Which is why Omaha is the team I hope to avoid in March! Down a point with 3:16 left, in our recent rematch at the Mabee Center . That team seems the most capable and talented from what I've seen. I blame nerves as that's easily the largest HOME crowd this group has played in front of. I think we are able to learn the same type of lessons you would in a loss, in our close victories though, so it's the best outcome as our record at this point is very important. One thing I love about this roster is these guys are hungry for minutes. They play hard, and rarely if ever take plays off. It's like watching a snowball rolling down a hill, the defensive intensity has led to PLAYING better and better defense, which has led to more offense, which has led to widespread success, and right now these guys look like they are having fun while wiping the floor with just about everybody! It's hard to imagine us struggling to score, it happens to everybody/every team, but the time we've all been waiting for is rapidly approaching, the guys know it, and they look ready. "This is the last dance" in the words of Max Abmas (with a very confident smile). We will try and send a message to the committee, and National media, just like we have been doing the last several games. ORU +32

  35. To be fair* you didn't say he was classless you said he "could be classless." I read that to be an important distinction between a sweeping statement that this is a classless person and your more narrow statement that at time this person exhibits classless behavior. *This is becoming the most overused phrase on the message board so I seized the opportunity to be on trend.

  36. We all know in sports that any team can look great one game and then so/so the next. No matter who they are, even the Houston Cougars. Usually ORU guards the Tommies shooters well and then is ok with Bjorkland scoring 20 in the paint. Then the Eagles win the battle on the boards by 8-10. That is also how South Dakota beat St. Thomas on the road. That seems to be the winning formula, so why change it now.

  37. Very fond memories of the Roos Michael Watson in his bad boy days as a UMKC sharpshooter. He was the Kangaroo player we loved to hate!! The night he hung 54 points on the Golden Eagles, stomping on the Eli emblem at midcourt as he ran back on defense, stands out as one of the most memorable games ever for me. He absolutely couldn't miss. At one point he was double teamed and trapped in the SW corner of the court. With nowhere to go with the ball, he just heaved it in the direction of the basket and it went in!! That's the kind of night he was having. It was the most points ever scored in a single game by a UMKC player. I believe there was some sort of altercation between Watson, his mom, and some ORU players or fans in the arena or outside in the parking lot after the game. Thankfully that didn't get too nasty. Since that time I believe he's had a conversion to Christ and a complete turnaround in his life. Happy to see him in a good place now. Incredibly, that game was back in 2003. I'm sure this is brought up every time Watson's name comes up - at least when I'm posting on the board!
