  1. In anticipation of this weekend’s road games, here’s what I’ve discovered: 1. The men’s game on Saturday vs Western Illinois is scheduled for 2 p.m. (rather than the 7 p.m. to which we have grown accustomed). Wouldn’t want you to miss it! 2. Here’s a link that might work for the WI game: https://goleathernecks.com/coverage 3. Aahh, appears the broadcast is on ESPN+. Yea!

  2. 5(!) vote "points" this week in the AP poll, meaning if every team that got votes was ranked, ORU would be ranked 39th. https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll

  3. From the article: “Fans can support their favorite players in the remaining rounds by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, February 10 on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process."

  4. Does anyone know if the Tommies have any kind of message board? I mean, I don't expect anything they might have to bear any resemblance to ours (kind of like our home venues), but I can't find anything so far in Google searches and such. Expecting ORU to be favored by 8 points or so when the line comes out Wednesday; and since it's another crackerbox "arena" (seats 1,800 fans in bleachered comfort) I'm expecting another sellout, which ORU's traveling road show seems to be drawing at each stop in the Summit.

  5. It would be quite a challenge because even if Coach Mills wins on average 20 games per season then it would take him 12 more years to catch Coach Sutton. Which is a high expectation because over 12 years usually even good coaches have an off season. So, realistically it would probaly take 15 years to catch Coach Sutton. Whatever one may think of Sutton, he was a consistent winner besides those last two seasons. Just a solid guy that was good for a long time. In fact, he had 14 straight winning seasons. Can Mills do that? Time will tell

  6. This just comes from 50 years of seeing otherwise run-of-the-mill teams play out of their minds at home when ORU visits. My dad had a matter-of-fact saying he would always use for everything from contests like these, to the airline losing your luggage, to your order getting screwed up in the drive-thru: "It's tough on the road."

  7. You guys keep getting me worried about these games and then we kill the other team. 10-1 home record is impressive. I think if we play our game, this won't be close. They have to guard every player on the floor, any one of whom can go off for 15 points (or more for some) on a given night. That pressure is wearing teams out by the second half. Instead of having Max take some plays off, I think we should sit him for several 2-3 minute stretches and keep the offense moving to not let the opponent's defense rest. We have enough legs on the bench to run the whole game and run the (Summit League) opponent out of the gym. I say ORU 84-63.

  8. I'm not sure ORU is better than any of the four teams they've lost to; and I don't think it matters since they all are rated higher than ORU and won the game in their own gym. ORU can't be penalized for not beating teams they haven't played. Outside of those four losses where they were not favored on the road and in all but one were competitive the entire game, ORU has beaten everyone else on their schedule. Literally not one slip-up; that's saying something...

  9. I also think that we are a far better team now than we were when we played those road loss games (NM excluded perhaps). I would love to get another crack at St Mary’s or Utah St. now with the way our defense is playing, especially at home.

  10. ORU wins again to improve to 11-12(8-4).....Cooper leads with 25.....look out in Sioux Falls....this bunch will do some damage.....

  11. I would be interested in any insider information on this year's team, as ORU has seen some wholesale changes since last season. According to the "ORU 2023 Quick Facts" media release, ORU only has 15 of 36 letter winners returning, and 19 new players on the roster. Gone are the starters at several key positions: C, SS, LF, RF, and the pitchers who started 40 of the 58 games in 2022. That is a LOT of changeover! Having an elite closer like Cade Denton is huge, but a relief pitcher can only get a save if the team is leading when the closer comes in. Any insights as to who fills the key positions, and fills out the starting rotation?

  12. So much to talk about re: this unexpected signing today by ORU men's basketball: Welcome Beckham Frey & family to the ORU program! Doesn't Coach Mills look good in a suit and tie! Whatever he's wearing, Coach Mills should never stand next to Conner Vanover in a photo-op!

  13. Which is why Omaha is the team I hope to avoid in March! Down a point with 3:16 left, in our recent rematch at the Mabee Center . That team seems the most capable and talented from what I've seen. I blame nerves as that's easily the largest HOME crowd this group has played in front of. I think we are able to learn the same type of lessons you would in a loss, in our close victories though, so it's the best outcome as our record at this point is very important. One thing I love about this roster is these guys are hungry for minutes. They play hard, and rarely if ever take plays off. It's like watching a snowball rolling down a hill, the defensive intensity has led to PLAYING better and better defense, which has led to more offense, which has led to widespread success, and right now these guys look like they are having fun while wiping the floor with just about everybody! It's hard to imagine us struggling to score, it happens to everybody/every team, but the time we've all been waiting for is rapidly approaching, the guys know it, and they look ready. "This is the last dance" in the words of Max Abmas (with a very confident smile). We will try and send a message to the committee, and National media, just like we have been doing the last several games. ORU +32

  15. As OT and his Dad said - it’s tough to win on the road. The home team is familiar with the arena and they usually get calls from the officials on their home court. ORU needs to stay focused, defend well and use their athleticism/depth to wear down the Tommies. Don’t look past any opponent and just win the next one. I don’t care how much we win by as long as we win.

  17. Beating the "at-large bona fides" dead horse just a bit more, this is a pretty good synopsis of how the committee might view ORU's resume should the Golden Eagles stumble in Sioux Falls. I don't think it's possible to quantify just how much the last factor listed might resonate with committee members: it basically represents EVERYTHING good about college basketball right now...

  18. ORU picking up 5 votes in this week's AP Top 25, from 3 voters: David Cloninger, The State (Columbia, SC) - 23rd (3 votes) Kelly Hines, Tulsa World (Tulsa, OK) - 25th (1 vote) Dave Preston, WTOP Radio (Washington, DC) - 25th (1 vote) Wondering how many schools that are ranked or receiving votes in the AP Top 25 have ever been denied an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament?

  19. They play in a cracker box right now, but within 2 years they will have a brand new basketball/hockey arena. With the twin cities recruiting ground, they will continue to improve over time IMHO.

  22. I would tend to agree. Usually the #5 seed teams are in the lower divisions of their P5 conferences. Their mental makeup is one of losing frequently and making that acceptable. I have to believe that no one in the #4 or #5 seed would relish the opportunity to meet an ORU team that just won their conference tournament.

  23. I've watched a lot of Big 10, SEC and ACC games lately (trying to access potential #5 Seeds if ORU is a #12) and I've been shocked at the poor play by a lot of these otherwise-talented teams. I think part of the problem for these P5 schools is their rosters are so young, due to early exits for the NBA and the transfer portal to supposedly-greener pastures. Or maybe it's just poor/lazy coaching. For whatever reason, these teams are wild, sloppy, inconsistent and far down the rungs of the basketball IQ ladder. With the way ORU is playing defense these days, I relish the opportunity to see what might be achieved against one or two of these so-called "big boys" should ORU advance to the NCAA tournament.

  24. From the column: “Coinciding with the Hurricane depression are happy days at rival Oral Roberts. Before Saturday’s Summit League assignment at Kansas City, ORU was 46-17 in its last 63 games. In advance of Sunday’s Wichita State game, Tulsa is 27-49 in its last 76 games.” But we are not, I repeat not, passing them.

  25. Not to give it up to myself (because we all know I would NEVER do such a thing), but I labeled Mwamba ORU’s best pro prospect back in November. He’s Tony Allen (OSU and Memphis Grizzlies) with a jump shot.

  26. We had a great time and may even be coming back with the whole fam damily in a couple of weeks! Trying to find the right VRBO... OT: As far as I can tell we're "friends" on Facebook, so if you can't see my post, it means you've blocked or unfriended me and that ain't cool, brah! Ouch! Rob
