  1. Fortunately I did not get to see the beatdown SDSU administered to us in the Summit Semis this afternoon. Nothing like getting hammered by 31 points. Sadly this is the expected norm for our WBB program. I did watch yesterday's game with WIU and we did a good job of making a 12-17 team (WIU) look really great. As I watched the game I thought back to other games I saw the ladies play this year (always on TV) where I was less than impressed with how we performed. In short, we usually beat the bad teams we play and get waxed by the good teams on our schedule. This is not a new thing for our program either. Year after year we are mediocre at best. Not terrible but not great either. Coach Cussen's record as HC now stands at 109-106 in seven years. Yes, her first team won the Southland Conference and lost to Tennessee in the 1st round of the Big Dance, but their overall record that year (2012-13) was 18-13 and she inherited a team that the previous year had gone 20-11 with several very talented players returning including Seniors Kevi Luper and Jaci Bigham. The following year (2013-14) and with those two gone she promptly led us to a 9-20 season. In 2014-15 we went 18-16 and won a couple of games in the WBI. Since then and for the last 4 years we have lost in either the 1st round or the semis of the Summit League Tourney to either SDSU or USD. In short, we are not a bad team just a mediocre team that can never finish more than the 4th best team in the Summit League and no post season bids whatsoever. Maybe you are satisfied with that but I am not. We have made the WNIT in 1983, 2010, 2011 and 2012. We have made the Big Dance in 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008 and Cussen's team her first year in 2013. And finally, we did make the WBI under Coach Cussen in 2015. So, our program does have a track record of post season play prior to Coach Cussen. I do not feel she can get us back there. It has been 7 years and she has not come close to winning 20 games in any season she has been the HC. How long does this go on? Finally as for the Baseball team I am fearful we will lose both the Wichita State and Missouri State games and find ourselves with a losing record going into Summit League play. The only thing that will save us in that sport is that we play in an awful league for baseball against what amounts to a bunch of stiffs and then go to the NCAA Tourney and make a quick exit. When we play truly talented teams we are getting crushed. It is time for a change in the ENTIRE Athletic Department. I too want to see improvement in MBB but I also want better in ALL sports!

  2. Excellent post, BlueGold. At least the women got a W in the post season, which is great. But you look back on the overall record of our current coach staff and it points to the same problem the whole athletic department is having. The faith-based university thing is no excuse for coaches. Our teams just haven’t been able to compete at a high level in the summit for many years now. And we keep pointing to baseball as our shining light, but when was the last time they won a meaningful game in the Tourney, let alone made any sort of noise. Sad sad time to be a fan of oru athletics.
