Post season play

Postby oruvoice » February 5th, 2010, 10:54 am

Obviously, the goal is the NCAA tourney. But, just wanted to throw this out...

If we get to 20+ wins and fall short in the conference tourney, do you think we'd get an NIT bid with a 21-13 type of record? CBI?

Considering all the injuries this year, 20+ wins and ANY post season berth would have to be considered a HUGE accomplishment.

Can't see us making the NIT, but I guess it would depend on how many other 20-win teams there are, and what their RPI's are like (we keep hovering around the #130 mark).

Would also depend on whether our regular-season champ fails to win the tournament in Sioux Falls. In that event, the NIT takes the regular-season champ automatically, and I can't see two Summit League schools making their 32-team field.

Would imagine we might get a nod from the CBI or "that other tournament" (gee, look what an impression it made last year...), but probably as road fodder for some state school they're trying to grease to the finals. Would an Oklahoma or an Arkansas accept a bid to one of those tournaments? Would we want to play them at their place?

I think Arkansas might accept.

I don't think OU would.

Why would Arkansas accept and OU not accept both Big Conference Schools?

With Arky, OU, OSU, & TU, all looking at NIT bids this year, I think there is a good chance you'll see ORU at one of those locales, assuming we don't make the NCAA tourney.

Even with my 'hypotheticals', I still think we have a decent shot at making the BIG DANCE.

Did anyone see Oakland trailing Centenary last night, with under 1 minute left in the first half (at Oakland)? And, then winning by only 11...

I think Oakland was only up by 3 with about 4 minutes to go in the game. They are not playing their best basketball right now. We get them for their homecoming game though.

Interesting-- I just randomly checked realtimerpi.com and our RPI has jumped from the 140's to 118 overnight, even surpassing Bracketbuster opponent Austin Peay (120). I would assume that just taking the floor against Oakland would bump it a little higher also. Of course, we do still have a couple 300+ teams left on the schedule, but I wonder if we have a chance to get 'sub 100' after the conf. tourney..win or lose?

Austin Peay won their fourth straight last night on the road at TN-Martin. They will have a tough time this weekend with Murray State, but they could also be a slight RPI boost when we play on the 20th.

TheEagleman has read recently that the NCAA is considering boosting the tournament field to 96 in the near future....under consideration are automatic bids not only for the conference tournament winners but also for the regular season winners if they are two different schools...of course, that would not fill up all 32 extra spots...more at large spots for mid-majors?....either way, it bodes well for schools like ORU....we would have two shots to get in......TheEagleman is all for going to 96....top 8 seeds in all four regions get byes....so it's only one extra game for the rest of the field.....it would also mean better games in the 2nd round because the top 4 seeds would have to play tougher games....patsies or schools who lucked out and won the conference tournament would likely be eliminated in the first round...so the 1-4 seeds would likely get tougher matchups...sooner or later a #1 seed would lose in their first game....it hasn't happened yet....

Good analysis, EM. Personally I like the Field of 64/65, but you make a good case for expansion. My boys were kind of disgusted by the prospect when we heard about it recently, but I'll point them in the direction of some of your musings. Good food for thought.

I think I would like a 96 team field if:

1. Conference tournament champions and regular season champions were included.

2. First round games were still played on a neutral court (many AD's have already been lobbying for the higher seed to host).

I think in the end it will just be a way to get more "BCS" schools in the tournament and make it even harder for a George Mason or Davidson to make it to the later rounds.

Wouldn't giving the top 8 seeds-BCS type schools mostly-a bye first round, greatly decrease the chance "second" round upsets? Why mess with what is already so good?

As a road team maybe - no way we foot the required guarantee to host a game.

TU spent around $250,000 on guarantees in 2008 on their way to their CBI championship, though some of it was recouped in ticket and concession sales.

Still, that's an awful lot to pay for a 3' x 4' banner...

Am I horrible person for not wanting any more games? We're tired, banged up, shorthanded, and it's just been a very long season. I say let's look fondly back at what the guys accomplished and clean out the lockers for the summer. If a CBI game causes any type of significant expenditure, I don't think it's worth it at all.

Tough to end the season on a loss, eli, although it nearly always happens. These guys are young and recuperate quickly, and probably aren't ready for the season to end. If another game comes their way, I'm sure they'll want to play.

On the other hand, if that doesn't happen, I won't necessarily be disappointed.

I kind of agree with this. Better to go out and beat teams on the recruiting trail.

If they could get a chance to play again they should. Scott wouldn't mind a chance to get a couple more wins or possibly make a run. Let the boys play! More practices and more game experience for younger players is a plus. Another game would certainly be a reward for the seniors. I'm sure Kevin would love to play another game.
