Amazing Stat:  leading up to this year, 137 straight games over four seasons without allowing 90-or-more points.

This season, 6-of-16 games giving up 90-or-more, all in the last 10 games, including two in the Mabee Center....wow!

Question:  does the new 30-second shot clock rule have something to do with it?

thanks for the stats.....the shot clock might be worth a few points, but this is a total defensive collapse.

watching the game last night, between the crowd size and play on the court, i thought...this is like watching the Trickey teams transitioning back to D1.

your numbers show i should have included Self's first season as well.

last 9 D1 games...ORU is 2-7 (Detroit and Tulsa) and giving up a whopping 88.3 ppg.

what a horrible stretch and Obi is doubtful for Denver per the coaches show.....it might get worse.

Denver averages 64 ppg; anything under 80 should be considered a small victory for this club.

Wow.

Could some of this be due to the current "Golden State" climate in basketball (at all levels) where scoring is highly valued and defense is a necessary evil?

Defense/rebounding is mostly effort and not skill; is it harder to get players to buy defensively now?

I think that's a good point, DR. C......did anyone see the OU-Kansas game last night....that was a classic and high scoring albeit it did go 3 OTs....109-106...Buddy Heild with 46 points....and Bill Self's hair looked great for the entire 3 hour contest....:P

I was surprised at how many quick shots ORU took at home against South Dakota - seemed like the antithesis of a Scott Sutton team.

I found myself saying under my breath, "SLOW DOWN!!"

More shots taken means more shots missed, and without offensive rebounds means more possessions for the opposition, which means more shots for them, more offensive rebound opportunities for them, etc.

Shot clock be damned - due to their lack of size, ORU needs to be more deliberate on the offensive end and get to the free throw line more.

That, in effect, is playing better DEFENSE while on OFFENSE.

Has ORU surrendered 90 points more than twice in its entire history with the Summit League up until this year?

I will say of our eight losses, six of those teams play a decidedly uptempo style and rate in the top third nationally in possessions per game.

Which, in my mind, makes tomorrow's game against polar opposite Denver (dead last in the NCAA in that category) perhaps the biggest game of the year for ORU in terms of "figuring things out" before things really fall apart.

Losing high scoring games because we're not good defensively is bad, but it seems we haven't had the ball handlers to dictate the pace of games in a few years. Which is odd for a team with mostly guards.

To answer your question:. the only season ORU gave up 90-or-more points in more than one Summit League conference game was early in the Scott Suttone regime, vs. IUPUI in both games, one of which was triple overtime. Remember Odell Bradley?  Dude owned us!

Also, the last time ORU gave up 90 points in a game before this season was a Summit League game in late February, 2011 at Oakland, when the Grizzlies were really loaded offensively.

Odell Bradley was a load. He was an underrated player in this league since he played at the same time as Michael Watson, but I believe their point averages were about the same PLUS Bradley pulled down like 9 rpg.

I think the game at the Mabee Center was 2OT as well and Bradley went for 40 in both meetings.

Bilas breaks down scoring, possessions, FT's, resulting from rule changes....

College basketball teams are averaging 6 more points per game this season, and Jay Bilas thinks this will continue now that we're in conference play.
