Nice start for the Summit League

The Summit was 5-0 Saturday, and on Sunday ORU won and Omaha put up a very good showing as an 18-point underdog at Colorado (Sagarin #42), leading by 6 at the half before falling 87-82.

That moves the Summit up to #14 out of 34 conferences in the Sagarin ratings (actually the #13 conference out of 32 since he splits a couple conferences in two), just ahead of the Big West, Colonial, Conference USA and the Horizon. It's the highest I've seen the league in a long time.

By contrast, the Southland is #32 out of 34, with a combined record of 1-28! http://sagarin.com/sports/cbsend.htm.

SFA has really stumbled out of the blocks, and Northwestern State lost guard Jalan West, one of the best players in the league, for the season with an ACL injury in the last minute of their opening game.

I watched SFA against Northern Iowa, and I think the new shot clock is really affecting their deliberate style of play.  They were forcing a lot of shots late in the clock when it appeared they were still in the process of trying to get something easier.  They're going to have to learn to either play faster, or shorten their sets.

Otherwise, gonna be a long year for them - and the league...

For another comparison, again using Sagarin ratings, SFA is the best team in the Southland at #180, which would be 7th in the Summit.

South Dakota, the worst team in the Summit at #227, would be third in the Southland (ahead of 11 of their 13 teams).

The Summit League is now 40-17 (31-17 including only D-1 games) including 6 teams with only one loss.  The current RPI for the conference is 14th and ORU's current RPI is 56.  As a reference point, the Summit League ended the 2014-2015 season ranked 21st in Conference RPI and the Southland was 29th.  This is a definite improvement up to this point vs. last year.

Other notable RPIs: New Mexico - 27, Tulsa 44, and SDSU - 49.

yes, getting that RPI up higher than MWC and MAC was pretty cool, unfortunately once summit league starts it falls pretty fast.

getting a 2 big league has to be the goal, but its an uphill battle nonetheless
