ORU at IUPUI

The Jags have not had a great season at 8-14 overall....but they are just behind us in the Summit standings at 4-4 and it's been win one lose one so far since the start of the new year; they are coming off a loss at WIU in their last game but have played only once in the past 12 days....IUPUI doesn't have a player averaging in double figures but have eight guys averaging 5 or more points....very strange team.....they gave us a run at Mabee Center last month and frankly should have won the game....Word hit the bomb at the buzzer to tie it and ORU won in overtime by 8 points....we was lucky.....frankly, we appear to be the better team but ORU has been hard to predict on the road....TheEagleman is totally throwing darts here but I feel that we must get a split on this trip to Indiana....if we are gonna win a game this is likely the one.....as usual it will be sloppy and ugly just like our first match up in Tulsa....Billbury is due for a breakout game and Obi has been playing well along with Henderson....ORU guts out a 68-65 win over the Jaguars and then it's on to Fort Wayne..... :eagles:

Looks like ORU is a 1.5 point favorite in tonight's game at IUPUI.....tough to take a road favorite especially with our inconsistant play.....Vegas really likes ORU for some reason as we are often road favorites in the Summit....TheEagleman will probably lay off this one....its a toss up....but I have my ORU t-shirt on today.... GO BLUE!!!.....  :eagles:

By the way....forgot to mention that Coach Sutton is going for #300 tonight....could be an historic win for him at IUPUI....would love to see him get that one at home but two road losses aren't worth it.....ORU needs to get that 300th win for Scott tonight or Saturday at the latest....GO BLUE!!!..... :eagles:

A comparison of the two teams' conference-only statistics:

IUPUI

FG%: 47.4%

FT%: 69.1%

3-PT%: 33.0% (30/91)

PPG: 62.9

PPP: 0.97

Assists: 11.4

TO's pg: 15.6

ORU

FG%: 44.9%

FT%: 73.1%

3-PT%: 41.4% (58/140)

PPG: 72.0

PPP: 1.11

Assists: 11.3

TO's pg: 10.1

We shoot a bit lower percentage than the Jags - because we are more perimeter oriented (not as much post presence), but are better from the 3 point and free throw lines. They commit 5.5 more turnovers than we do per game - which should result in more possessions for us. We need to really focus on defense and rebounding.

WHEN, OH WHEN, IS THIS TEAM GOING TO LEARN HOW TO FINISH A GAME?? :@

...OK, that's better.

Lot's of good things tonight - encouraged by several developments:

1.  Intensity level was excellent!

2.  A little bit of full court pressure in the first half!

3.  Mixed in a little zone!

4.  Brandon was scoring!

5.  Denell was blocking!

6.  Darian was defending!

7.  Free throws were falling!

If this team could just limit the turnovers (too many tonight) and hit some more shots (don't hold your breath too long on that one, but still...), they really could make some noise the rest of the way in conference play.

I figured before this 3-game roadie that ORu would likely win a close one, lose a close one, and lose one by a large margin (10 points or more)

After just two games, ORU has already won a close one, and won one by a large margin.  Winning at IPFW would be a REALLY nice cherry on the top of an already successful trip.

GREAT 300TH WIN FOR SCOTT SUTTON!

Really solid ROAD win.  Great energy to start the second-half - and then after giving up some ticky-tack fouls and easy transition baskets, the Eagles hold on with some clutch free throw shooting and strong defense.  All the stats look good, save the 16 turnovers, some of them totally unnecessary and unforced.  But 54% FG percentage,  44% 3PG, 22-28 from the line, and winning the rebounding battle 34-26 are all something to be proud of.  And, of course, Denell's 6 blocks were significant.  Also, I have been a harsh critic of Brandon Conley's play often throughout his career, but his first half effort kept us in the game tonight, when it could have easily gone astray. Well done, Brandon!

I was watching the IUPUI broadcast online, and as ORU gave up a turnover and an easy basket to cut the lead to six, leading Coach Sutton to call a timeout with 1:32 left in the game, the announcers overheard Scott imploring the team "Guys, can we make it easy just ONCE???"  Nice finish, Eagles!

Congrats to Coach Sutton on win #300.....TheEagleman didn't see the game because unfortunately, MrsEagleman is back in the hospitial with a nasty illness.....but was following on my phone and glad to see that the Good Guys played a fairly solid game for the final 30 minutes and got a 2nd straight road victory....of course, any win on the road is good and now we have a shot at a triple on Saturday night.....See what happens when Conley scores?....those 12 points he got were the difference in this 78-68 win....that and shooting over 50% from the floor and 75% from the FT line.....solid efforts by Obi, Korey and Henderson also.....now it's on to Fort Wayne and let's finish this trip off against an improving IPFW squad who pounded SDSU tonight....unfortunately, NDSU came back and beat Omaha.....but we are now tied with the Jacks in the loss column..... :nerd:

Color me pleasantly surprised! If we could somehow sweep this 3-game roadie, we are right back in the hunt!

It's amazing how perspectives and thoughts can change, in one week.
