SDSU at ORU

The Jacks come to Mabee Center tomorrow night on a five game roll....they are 14-7 overall and 2nd in the Summit at 5-2..ORU is 10-19 and 4-2.....they whipped IPFW on Wednesday night by 30 points....the same team that we struggled to beat just a few nights earlier.  SDSU has very balanced scoring with three guys averaging 13 points per game....they have some big guys including 6-9 Cody Larson who could give us fits inside.....TheEagleman knows that ORU is undefeated on the home floor but this game has big trouble written all over it....a win tomorrow night and we are right back in the race for a top 2 spot....a loss and we are on the slow spiral downward....the Golden Eagles are coming off one of the most crushing losses of the past few years at Denver.....we are all still hurting but I wonder how the players are feeling and how will they perform on Saturday night....will they be ticked and come out blazing?....or will they still be thinking about the Denver collapse?......this game is a test of their character.....honestly, I just don't think this ORU team is very good....Coach Sutton and the staff seem out of answers.....anybody know what he had to say after the game?....Coach must have been very upset....TheEagleman didn't see it.....just the final result.....and I am still ticked.....I just think that SDSU has too much for our guys and even if we do have a late lead there is no reason to think that we can protect it.....I think the home court winning streak stops here....SDSU wins and it might not even be close.....Jacks 77  ORU 70....  :|

The looks on Scott's face and his body language in the last few minutes and after the game ended, including when he was going through the line shaking hands like his hand was a dead fish, told the story in spades.  Not unexpected after that collapse.

I don't know about the players, but we've got some guys that have been around and hopefully they've moved on from the Denver loss and are ready to come out tomorrow and kick some tail and defend their house.  Any athlete should be motivated enough to put a bad result behind them and look forward to the next chance to come out and play and get a win.

I'm hoping the students come out for both games tomorrow.  From what I've noticed, and correct me if I'm wrong, the turnout for men's and women's games by the student body since the start of this semester hasn't been very good.

Go Eagles!

Just a couple of notes:

The Jacks have outscored their past 5 opponents by an average of 22 points while holding them to 55 points per game.

SDSU has 2 P5 transfers starting on the team. Cody Larson- Florida and George Marshall- Wisconsin

Starting forward, Jake Bittle played his prep ball in Bixby, OK and said he was recruited by ORU early on but later dropped off on him. He should bring a good amount of friends and family to watch him play.

SDSU has yet to win in Mabee Center since going D1.

The player to watch on SDSU is true freshman Reed Tellinghusan. He is a helluva shooter.

Watch for Cody Larson to have a big game with ORU's lack of size in the post.

South Dakota State is the hottest team in the league, and should be the favorite.  The Wisconsin-transfer Marshall coming eligible at the semester has made a big difference.

I've watched SDSU play three times, and the ORU post men really shouldn't have a problem handling Cody Larson in the paint.  If they do, then they didn't come ready to play.

Much more concerned about the perimeter shooting from all the Jackrabbits.  As the end of the game proved at Denver, ORU has been particulary poor this season at defending the three.

Going to find out real quick if this ORU team truly is a "player" in the conference race or not Saturday night...

big game tonight....ORU needs to stay in the lead pack of the league race.  the good guys need to bounce back after the collapse at Denver.

let's hope the game was promoted on campus and the student body shows up.

Ok St and Tulsa have noon tip road games, so maybe the casual sports fan in Tulsa will take in an ORU game.  probably would have been a good game to offer discounted tickets or a buy-one-get-one type of promotion to get a larger crowd out.

SDSU will be ready to go tonight looking for their first win in the Mabee Center.

ORU really does need a win tonight....this is a huge game that will likely determine the direction of the remainder of our season.....Good Guys must get off to a good start and exert their will on SDSU...the Jacks come to Mabee with a ton of confidence and no doubt think they can get their first victory on the road against us...if ORU gets off to a poor start in this one it could be a long night.....Frankly....TheEagleman is more than a bit nervous....

Larson killed ORU on the glass and ORU can't hit FTs...not sure how ORU is up at half.

gotta get Korey going...

10-21 FT for ORU....SDSU was clearly the better team.  ORU is a middle of the pack Summit team right now.

what's going on with Word?  he only had 7 min played.

nice prediction there OT that ORU's big men could handle Larson....they had no answer for him all night.

Missing 11 free throws really hurt, and we couldn't defend Larson consistently enough no matter who we put on him.  A couple of big threes by Korey late kept us right there but we didn't play smart in the last minute, giving up an easy dunk when we let their guys get behind us on the trap and then fouling Marshall on the inbounds play instead of letting them throw it in and trying to get a steal or a positive play.

Two straight tough losses in conference.  Gotta regroup, there's still nine games left.

Both the men's and women's teams are 10-10 and 4-3 in conference. When we don't make our FTs we will lose most games. We missed the front end of 2 1and1s. Then I don't believe any fouls were called on SDSU for the last 5-6 minutes. Definitely the bottom of the barrel refs at our game tonight and it did affect us because SDSU started playing physically in the 2nd half and the refs let them do so which led to some uncharacteristic turnovers.

There are a lot of tough road games left. The 3 games we have lost in conference have all been close, winnable games. This is a crucial point in the season and we need to turn it around!

i don't think it was about the refs.  SDSU hit the offense glass, got more hustle plays, and seemed to want the game more.  ORU's defense was also pretty bad in the second half.  SDSU seemed like the better team on the court....i think they are 12-15 points better than ORU up in SD on their home floor.

Can't win when you shoot 45% from the FT line.....and at home?....geez....if we just shoot 70% we win this game.....as I stated above.....this ORU team just isn't very good.....Billbury was absent all night until those two late 3s......very sad.....maybe we can beat Tabor in the next game.....I think...... :|

LOL - read it agsin: I said if the ORU big men don't handle him, then they didn't come ready to play.

Scott Sutton apparently felt the same way; saying in his postgame radio comments that the coaching staff felt going into the game that they didn't need to double-team Larson if the ORU bigs just did their jobs.

They didn't.

Just another case of a pedestrian Summit League big man making a mockery of ORU's interior defense.

This team is what it is: far too flawed in far too many ways to have so many things go poorly on a given night and expect to win.

SDSU didn't even play that well; ORU simply was worse.

if Larson is a pedestrian Summit big man, where do we sign up to get a few of those guys? and what does that make ORU's big men?  i guess it's safe to assume we've seen the last of Drew Wilson.  i don't think he has even been mentioned in over a month.

Larson is a preseason 1st team all conference and a POY candidate. How in the hell is he pedestrian especially in the Summit League? 27 and 12 speak for itself.

Agree that both teams didn't play their best games. Free throws were atrocious for both teams. Parks, who is a 80% ft shooter, went 3-8. Very uncharacteristic of him. Parks has been in a shooting slump from 3 all season long and he went 3-3 last night. That is a good sign for Jacks Fans. I was surprised how well ORU guarded the 3-point line. SDSU only got off 11 attempts and our best shooter (Tellinghusan) only shot the ball 3 times the whole game. SDSU rebounded terribly. Giving up 18 o-boards is not ideal.

Can't wait for the next match-up in Frost!

In response:

Drew Wilson is gone for good. Too many strikes.

Larson IS better offensively than any of ORU's big men. But if he's a POY candidate, it just proves how far down the Summit League is this season. He had a career game as ORU's post men misplayed him in the first half (by fronting him with no backside help), then excused him in the second half (due to foul trouble). Nice game - don't make it out to be more than it was.

And yes it would be nice if ORU could find a post player like Larson.

True point guards and players over 6'-9" - two things ORU either can't or won't sign these days.

Well...next year we will have a more experienced Owens at 6-9  and that 6-7 guy, Javan White coming in from Ames, IA......but that doesn't do up much good now.....ORU is going to be around a .500 team in the Summit this season....
