ORU at Missouri State

Rematch of last Monday night when we smoked the Bears at Mabee Center....it's likely to be a lot different tonight....MSU is tough at home....but they are also not playing great basketball.....if ORU gets a better effort from Obi and Billbury comes thru like he did on Saturday we should still win this one....but something tells TheEagleman that this won't be easy....I am expecting a war.....as always it's tough to win on the road....we will need a major contribution inside from Owens and Henderson to pull this off....Missouri State is still a 4 point favorite on the Vegas line.....not sure why but i am kinda liking ORU here......we hang on to win and give TheEagleman a Merry Christmas...................Eagles 76-73...... :eagles:

ORU melts on the road in the second half....recurring theme.

Coach Sutton is shortening up his bench.

Singleton - DNP

Lee - 5 min

Harris - 2 min

Disappointing loss. Had a 10 point lead at half time and only score 14 points in the second half - losing by 7. We are floundering.

ORU is going to have to grind out games this year...they just aren't a good shooting team.

the story of the first semester has to be the absolute non-factor of Lee and Harris. (it's not like they can't get on the court because the guys playing in front of them are tearing thing up)

Tough loss. Shooting was poor. While listening to Geoff I pulled up livestats on ESPN. Under the scoreboard it has several ORU stats listed, one of which was shooting percentage. Before last night's game our shooting percentage was ranked 326th in D-I. Out of 351 teams. That's not going to win you very many games. Add to that our free throw shooting, you've got a deadly cocktail.

This team seems to fade in the second half in nearly every game (last Monday against MSU excepted). What causes that? Fatigue? Mental toughness? Injuries? Leadership? I'm not really sure, but it seems to be a recurring theme that has so far cost us at least two games. According to Geoff, late in the game nearly all our shots were falling short, which seems to indicate fatigue.

Well, at least the defense was good!

*sigh*  Another final score that used to be a halftime score.

Is it this team, this current regime, or just college basketball in general?

Have you ever seen so many games - ORU, and nationally - with such pitiful offensive production?

Why can't guys shoot anymore?

And, even if they can't shoot, why can't they score (off set plays for easier shots, steals for lay-ups, drawing fouls and getting to the line, etc.)?

Are defenses just too good these days?  Is it just too hard to get a shot off?

Wish I knew the answer.

Bet the coaching staff does, too...

My son and I were talking about this last night. A lot (most) of college teams are struggling mightily to score. Kids don't know how to shoot. Is it because they work so hard on defense that they get tired? Who knows.

I was with family and did not watch/listen to the game. I did look at the game stats and game flow. In the second half we made 4 (!!) field goals out of 23 attempted. I was curious about who took these shots and from a quick review noticed that our post players took five of these 23 shots - making one of them.

13:57 Henderson - missed jumper (not sure is this designation is correct; if so, that is curious)

10:02 Conley - made jumper  (last field goal made by ORU)

 5:34  Henderson - missed jumper

 4:28  Owens - missed jumper

 4:11  Conley - missed jumper

We scored six points in the last 10:02 of the game on six made free throw on nine attempts. I think we attempted to get the ball inside - but not enough. I continue to be amazed at our inability (unwillingness) to make an entry pass to the post. When we can't make jump shots, we have to work harder to get higher percentage shots.

Our post players shot 6 of 12 from the field:

Henderson: 3 of 6

Conley:  2 of 3

Owens: 1 of 3

I would tell our guards that if they come down the court and don't make an entry pass into the post, they are going to sit the bench. Play the walk-ons if need be. If we make that entry pass, it will free up the perimeter.
