ORUalum
thanks....it sounds like they will be pouring big bucks into the Baby Mabee to turn it into a global learning center. how about the next phase of Mabee renovation is the replacing the lower bowl seating and getting rid of the putrid yellow/gold band on the outside facing of the Mabee and Baby Mabee. heck, while were at, can we just knock most of the gold off the entire campus? My season ticket seat is literally broken (probably from years of me plopping my big ol' keester in it). Plus, the upholstry is thread-bare, with tears on the corners. The seats adjacent to me are not much better, though the ones toward the middle of the row seem in better condition, prompting me to sit a couple of seats further down whenever possible. Which typically, with attendance the way it has been, isn't much of an issue. Here's hoping the retro-fitting of the Mabee Center arena seating comes sooner rather than later, 'cause it's only going to get worse as time goes on. tmh8286
Spoken like a true out-of-towner, alum!! There's more to seating than how it appears on TV!! It may be that the seats in "Johnson Theater" have seen more wear and tear, but the seats in our section (Section H, on the opposite side of the arena) are in great shape. One of the appealing aspects in my mind to the Mabee Center is the comfort of the seating. The seats may be of seventies vintage in appearance, but they also are in comfort. If our option is the ubiquitous hard plastic seats found in virtually every other arena I've been in, lets keep the ugly seats. I contend they're not chasing off a single person, and may even be attracting a few. Around the corner from my house Bill Warren is spending $43.5 million on a new Warren Theater, a luxury facility designed to cater to creature comfort - and I GUARANTEE there will not be a plastic seat in the house!
tmh8286
One other thing, alum - they ARE doing some sort of renovation on Citiplex Towers removing the gold and giving the buildings a different appearance, although, in all honesty, I can't really tell you exactly what it is that they're doing. All I know is that something is going on over there, and they're getting rid of the gold.

All I know is that something is going on over there, and they're getting rid of the gold. if i remember right from an article in the TW...it said they will be putting blue, energy efficient glass on the corners, but the gold facing would remain. i hope plans have changed and they are also scrapping the gold. i don't know if they could just paint that lattice work or remove it all together, but it sure would improve the aesthetic of the building. i never understood OR's and his architect's fascination with all things gold. goldeneagle1992
Yeah I worked security at cityplex and they are just putting in the blue glass on the corners and redoing the atrium roof. Unfortunately the gold was staying.
ORUJason
I like the gold and on a building that size trying to change the gold to something else would be a massive and expensive undertaking.

Excellent point, Doc - hadn't considered that. Johnson Theater seats have seen a lot more use over the years, dating back to every Sunday for years when Victory Church met there. Perhaps the best place to start in replacing the seats should just be in Sections A-B-C-D, and then work their way around the lower bowl as time and money permits.
