I don't mean to steal his thunder, but OT posted an interesting article on Twitter today, saying that they're even having trouble getting students to Cameron Indoor Arena at Duke:

Fabled Cameron Crazies succumbing to Cameron monotony at Duke

They have 1,600 give-away seats for students and only 650 are used on a good day.

If you watched any of the OSU/Missouri game the other night you saw a pretty empty arena, when hosting the number two team in the country. Granted, it was a mid-week game, but attendance was sparce.

Hey, thanks for posting it - it's a free World Wide Web!

According to the scanners, there were over 1000 ORU students at the Oakland game - in this day and age, that's outstanding.

TheEagleman would be happy to seee 5000 at the UMKC game.....the 3150 or so last night was disappointing but I realize it was a mid week school night....hopefully the students got juiced by last saturday nights game and the 12 game winning streak will bring out some Tulsa area ORU alums and a few Tulsans..... :nerd:

Last night I solved a mystery that has perplexed my for years - I attend a game and the crowd seems decent. I come home and watch the replay, and it looks increadibly thin. Our seats are in Section H, on the south side of the arena. Last night our family was chosen for the Vintage Pearl promotion and moved down courtside at about the 7:00 mark of the first half. I was shocked at the difference in the appearance between the north side and the south side. The north side was fairly full - the south side had just a sprinkling of people - and unfortunately that's the side you see on camera. It always SEEMS like there are more people there than it looks like on the broadcast. Truth is, there probably is.

TheEagleman believes you, TMH.....but all I can say is that attendence usually looks bad on TV with all the empty gold seats....maybe we should put the cameras on the other side.....perception is everything..... :nerd:

On average, I would estimate the difference to be at least 3-to-1 from one side to the other.

I think a lot of comp tickets that are given to sponsors, donors, etc are on the south side.

Exactly what I was thinking last night.

And, unfortunately, go unused the vast majority of the time.

Not sure why this issue has never been addressed. It seems like we would focus on how this affects perception and make moves to mitigate it.

I think it's a harder problem than it would seem on the surface. MM has spent TONS of time and effort trying to figure out a way to make things look better on camera. But at least one of the problems is that it involves moving people around, and most, including me, don't want to be moved! I assume that at least part of the reason Mike didn't follow through with his plan was that he met so much opposition to it. It's a very, very difficult problem to solve.

Just watched a little bit of a video someone posted on Facebook of the 2001 match-up between OSU and Missouri at Gallagher-Iba Arena. It appeared to be a sellout. GIA filled to the uppermost seats in the arena. This was nine days after ten were killed in the plane crash, and different circumstances than the other night, but it sure demonstrates the dwindling crowd.

Eddie, Sean and Quinn Snider were the coaches. Bob Berry replaced Bill Teegins that day on the radio.

a very interesting article.

i'd submit that it has much more to do with Duke games being available on tv or on-line or even student apathy than the author's theory that the Crazies need new traditions and are simply tired of the same old chants and songs.

Have a dances after the games. Only get in free if there by half time. You've already have a band! You've already have security! You already have concessions!

Surely the university would be in favor.

theeagleman5 would probably love it!

I think it's a complex issue that has many factors - something that OT has alluded to many times. I guess in some ways you could say it's a change in our culture.

WHAT IF - because at it's heart college basketball attendance is influenced by students - what we're seeing in basketball is the beginning of a sea change in our culture that will, over time, affect all sports? It's hard to imagine the football juggernaut being impacted, but it will be interesting to see what happens as the current college-age people mature into the working class. Will they support college and professional sports in the way their parents have? They sure aren't at this point.

Trust me, it's been brought up multiple times in the past, and it has fallen on deaf ears every time.
