Fabled Cameron Crazies succumbing to Cameron monotony at Duke
They have 1,600 give-away seats for students and only 650 are used on a good day.
If you watched any of the OSU/Missouri game the other night you saw a pretty empty arena, when hosting the number two team in the country. Granted, it was a mid-week game, but attendance was sparce.

According to the scanners, there were over 1000 ORU students at the Oakland game - in this day and age, that's outstanding.

Last night I solved a mystery that has perplexed my for years - I attend a game and the crowd seems decent. I come home and watch the replay, and it looks increadibly thin. Our seats are in Section H, on the south side of the arena. Last night our family was chosen for the Vintage Pearl promotion and moved down courtside at about the 7:00 mark of the first half. I was shocked at the difference in the appearance between the north side and the south side. The north side was fairly full - the south side had just a sprinkling of people - and unfortunately that's the side you see on camera. It always SEEMS like there are more people there than it looks like on the broadcast. Truth is, there probably is.

On average, I would estimate the difference to be at least 3-to-1 from one side to the other.

And, unfortunately, go unused the vast majority of the time.

I think it's a harder problem than it would seem on the surface. MM has spent TONS of time and effort trying to figure out a way to make things look better on camera. But at least one of the problems is that it involves moving people around, and most, including me, don't want to be moved! I assume that at least part of the reason Mike didn't follow through with his plan was that he met so much opposition to it. It's a very, very difficult problem to solve.

Eddie, Sean and Quinn Snider were the coaches. Bob Berry replaced Bill Teegins that day on the radio.

i'd submit that it has much more to do with Duke games being available on tv or on-line or even student apathy than the author's theory that the Crazies need new traditions and are simply tired of the same old chants and songs.

I think it's a complex issue that has many factors - something that OT has alluded to many times. I guess in some ways you could say it's a change in our culture.
WHAT IF - because at it's heart college basketball attendance is influenced by students - what we're seeing in basketball is the beginning of a sea change in our culture that will, over time, affect all sports? It's hard to imagine the football juggernaut being impacted, but it will be interesting to see what happens as the current college-age people mature into the working class. Will they support college and professional sports in the way their parents have? They sure aren't at this point.
